Rome
La Sapienza University (Italy) – Master in Practical Ethics and Bioethics; Spokesperson:
Prof. Eugenio Lecaldano; Study Program:
“Rome
La Sapienza has offered a Masters in Practical Ethics and Bioethics since 2002.
This degree continues and extends the longstanding partnership between the
Faculty of Philosophy and the Faculty of Mathematical Physical and Natural
Sciences. It also seeks to coordinate the teaching and research activities of
these two Faculties, which together form part of La Sapienza’s Science and
Technology Department.
The
Masters encourages an interdisciplinary study of how various forms of practical
ethics (business ethics, information ethics, communication ethics, work ethics,
professional ethics, teaching ethics) take shape. It analyses the main
practical bioethical problems arising from the developments of the last few
decades, namely in the environmental ethics, animal ethics and bio-medical
(human) ethics. This degree is geared towards not only preparing students for
careers related to these fields, but also to the specific training of
professional bioethicists and ethicists.
The
course lasts one year full-time, divided into two terms. It is aimed at
students with a degree in Philosophy, Arts, Law, Economics, Mathematical
Physical and Natural Sciences, Political Science, Sociology, Psychology,
Medicine, Pharmacology, or with an equivalent overseas qualification, who want
to further their studies and acquire professional skills in practical ethics
and bioethics. Admission is subject to interview (see ‘How to apply’ for
further details).
To
obtain this Masters, students need at least 60 university credits on top of
those already earned in their undergraduate degree. These credits can be
obtained by attending lessons, practices, seminars and group workshops, as well
as through personal projects.
The curriculum seeks to encourage analysis and provide the tools necessary for
specialist training in fields related to practical ethics and bioethics.
After
completing the course and presenting their final dissertation, students are
assessed and receive an MA in Practical Ethics and Bioethics. Teaching is
provided by distinguished Italian and foreign academics, and various
conferences are organised. The Masters promotes research, study and
collaboration with national and international bodies.
The
Masters is divided into two parts. In the first, modules provide basic thematic
foundations, which in the second are studied in greater depth, with a focus on
applied aspects and specific questions pertaining to the final dissertation.
Various
conferences are organised and attended, including the Conference on Bioethics
and Mass Media. Classes take place at the Department of Animal and Human
Biology, the Faculty of Natural Sciences, and the Faculty of Philosophy’s
Philosophical and Epistemological Studies Department (Villa Mirafiori). The
first teaching term is from March to June, and the second from September to
November. A teaching timetable (including classes, tutoring and conferences) is
provided. The final dissertation will be discussed at the end of the second
teaching term.”
